Monks of Niwa Temple (or Ninnaji ) are amusing themselves with a shadow of Kanae dance through a screen window. Kanae dance comes from Kanae, Nagano Prefecture. Yoshitoshi’s caricature category of kyôga are done two pictures in one oban sheet and exist ca. 40 subjects. Some of the preparatory drawing are in the British Museum.
