The kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan IV holds a pose, his left arm behind his head and his right arm grasping a handle. His stage makeup is entirely red, which matches the red of his outer kimono. Behind him we see what seems to be an advertisement or listing of kabuki plays or actors, as we see the mon (crests) of various famous actors against a white background. Shikan IV may be shown in the role of Oniwakamaru
