The Fox-Woman Kuzunoha Leaving her Child
Date: 1890
The beautiful Kuzunoha is transforming back into her vixen self, her young boy tragically tugging on her kimono. As a fox she had been rescued from fox-hunters by Abe no Yasuna, a 10th century nobleman. She reappeared as a beautiful young woman, whom he married. After three years she transforms back into her fox self, and leaves a poem written on a sliding screen, “If you think of me with love, come seek me in the forests of Shinoda, and you will find a kuzu-no-ha (kudzu) leaf”.
