Beauty with Moon and Cuckoo
Date: ca. 1768
A beauty looks up at a cuckoo passing near the moon, her thoughts with her lover. The stream beneath her verandah is beatified with blooming flowers. The poem is by Gotokudaiji Sadaijin: “hototogisu nakatsuru kata o nagemureba tada ariake no tsukizo nokoreru.“ (Watching a little cuckoo flying past, chirping//I turned to follow it but I found only the moon in the dawn, echoing its chirping).
