Romance novel magazine cover painting
Date: ca. 1960s
Painting for a Japanese magazine cover. One can infer from the dramatic juxtaposition that it was for a serialized novel set in Taisho period Japan. The woman’s kimono bears a pattern consistent with the Taisho era. Shimura did a number of well-received prints in the mid 20th century. As a young man, Shimura worked as an illustrator for newspapers, serialized novels, and magazines, notably for the Japanese magazine "Woman's world" (Fujokai). His most famous illustrations were for the novel Tange Sazen by Hayashi Fubo. Framed.
